Known as the “World Series of BBQ Competitions”, the American Royal Barbecue Contest is the world’s largest of its kind.  Drawing more than 500 competing teams, the contest kicks off the American Royal, the premier celebration of America’s heartland.

Spreading over 20 acres, in Kansas City, the American Royal has two contests – the Open Contest and the Invitation Contest.   The barbecue teams that compete in the Open consist of a combination of professional and amateur teams.  Teams competing in the Invitational require a qualifying Grand Championship in a KCBS sanctioned event.

The steaks are high for the Invitational, with a Grand Champion prize of $10,000, a trophy, and an automatic five- year exemption to the American Royal Invitation Contest.  This year’s 1st place winner of  the Royal-Invitation was TippyCanoe, led by Joe Beland.  “Unbelievable!” were the first words from Joe.  “We said we were going to win the American Royal someday, I just didn’t think it would happen in two years!”

TippyCanoe team members have been passionately barbequing for years, but competing in the barbecue competition circuit for only two years.  They have recently qualified for the Sam’s Club National BBQ Championship, to be held October 14-15, 2011 with total prize money of $100,000.

TippyCanoe used Memphis Wood Fire Grills to barbecue its award-winning meats to perfection.  Most teams incur sleepless nights in an effort to maintain consistent temperatures in their grills or pits.  But the Memphis Grills has a convection air system and Intelligent Temperature Control (ITC) that automatically maintains precise temperatures.  “The Memphis performs consistently, every time,” comments Beland.

This cutting-edge technology enables the food to be left unattended for extended periods of time and provides consistent temperatures through the ITC’s regulation of wood pellets.  The Memphis 3-in-1 grill, smoker, and convection oven produces temperatures from 180 to 650 degrees and supplies the perfect blend of convenience and delicious wood flavors.

Hearthland Products, the manufacturer of the Memphis Wood Fire Grill, congratulates the team members of TippyCanoe for their exceptional win and wish them well in the Sam’s Club National BBQ Contest.  Hearthland also congratulates Keith Diekman, Hearthland Engineer, who made the award-winning dessert with BBQ Team PelletHeads.com.  Diekmann tied for first place with a perfect score of 180, and then took 2nd place after a coin toss.
